Love is in the air!

This week we are having a Valentine's Party because the kiddies have worked so hard all term - their behaviour really has been fantastic and they seem to have progressed so quickly with their writing! 

Therefore, love really is in the air. 

Today I shared with them the story 'Froggy's First Kiss' - I was a bit dubious as I didn't want to encourage boyfriends/girlfriends/kissing blah blah especially as they're so very young! But this story is so lovely, in the end he gives his valentines to his mom. My kiddos LOVED this story, they were hooked - and they worked so hard to make their little Froggy/Frogalina's - just look at how gorgeous they all turned out!

 There will be lots more Valentine's activities throughout the week so I'll post a big blog Friday with all of the party pictures too! Happy Valentine's!

Encouraging Writing

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd do a quick update of what's new in my classroom. My New Year's Resolution was to try to get my kiddies writing more - they're pretty good at writing but they just didn't love it - so I had a mooch on pinterest (if you don't follow me on there you can find me here) and settled on a writing table. I already have a numeracy table and a role play area in my classroom so squeezing in a writing table took a bit of a classroom reshuffle, but it's in and it works and me and the kiddies are enamored with our gorgeous writing area!!

 

I downloaded the writing center starter kit (that's on my wall) from A cupcake for the Teacher on TpT which you can get from here. My kiddies love looking at this for ideas! It's so useful!

 On the table are a variety of different writing tools and equipment to excite the kids - I have racing car pens that they are obsessed with, finger spaces, nice smelly pencils and stamps so they can play teacher. I also put on some clipboards for kiddies who don't like sitting at the table and writing.

These are my drawers that I picked up in the sale for £12! Each drawer is differentiated (I have 4 ability groups) and contains activities and resources that are tailored for each group, as you can see in the drawer below the lower ability children still struggle with blending and segmenting so there is a game for them to practise using their sounds, the pencils and felt tips are chunkier, there is play-doh for them to build and refine their fine motor skills and there are magnetic letters for reluctant writers.

I also asked the children to bring in photographs of things they would like to write about - so children have their own little folder of things they would like to write about, some brought in photographs of their family, their pets or their holidays. 

The orange folder is my Things to Write about Pack which you can buy from my store here and they love using this to write about different topics. 

 My children are literally begging me to write at the moment! They access the writing table when they have finished their work, during guided reading or during our 10 minute write in the afternoon. If you don't have a writing table in your class, I highly recommend it - I cannot stop my children from writing at the moment! Hurrah!

Baker Ross Review

Oh my gosh has this poor blog been neglected. I have been very busy graduating from my Master's (woohoo!)

 Decorating my hall....

                                ... and getting far too swept up in the Christmas madness ...

 I have been meaning to post a review for a very very long time - so I will do that now and then do a blog update a little later on!

A few months ago the FABULOUS Baker Ross sent this parcel of goodie to me...

      ...  I was like a kid in a candy shop when I opened it up and insider there were these goodies...

 So me and the kiddies set to work right away to make use of all of the lovely stuff we had been sent! As it was Christmas we had lots of opportunities do use all of the lovely creative things they sent to us -

 We used the card to make these lovely Christmas cards...

The card is really lovely quality - nice and thick and it doesn't tear easily too, even when the kiddies used a ridiculous amount of glue!! 

Then we used the lovely stars (which are sticky, you just peel the back off and they're good to go!), glitter glues and gems to decorate our Diwa lamps that we had made for Diwali...

These photographs don't do them justice - they were so pretty up close and the children absolutely adored using the glitter glue and gems - they are somewhat a rarity in our school!!

I have used Baker Ross products several times before - they do fantastic activity packs that I have used in the classroom ...

The children made these stunning Sand Art Mosques in RE - you have seriously never heard silence like it before. They spent the whole afternoon making these beauties - the best thing was each child had their own little bags of sand and the mosques are self adhesive so there was no need for glue either - they just peeled off a little strip at a time, shook on a bit of sand and they were good. If you buy one thing from Baker Ross, seriously, buy these!!!
